Now clearing schools!

Hi all, I have just heard today that many schools in our region are to have vegetation clearing done within 2 weeks (over the holidays) as the schools have had buildings designated by the government as fire refuges. Please see below my comments to our principal at Badger Creek about this. I urge you all to check for any schools in your area, and find out the details of any clearing. All of us living in fire prone areas, especially the landcare networkers, are very much aware of our risks and do not want to see wholesale removal of vegetation for no good reason, as this can often cause more of a risk than prevent it, we have no details of who did the vegetation assessments and what clearing will take place.

Amendment VC61 introduces interim provisions to enable the removal, destruction or lopping of vegetation to reduce fuel load around buildings used for accommodation and on roadsides to assist with minimising risk to life and property from bushfire.

Upper Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges Regional Strategy Plan Amendment Bulldozed Through Parliament

This week in State Parliament, barely a week after the Government's controversial announcement regarding the 10/30 right on vegetation removal, both houses voted to amend the Upper Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges Regional Strategy Plan.

In what can only be described as a travesty of the democratic process, this item was only added to the notice paper yesterday and MPs received 150 odd pages to review and then debate today. This morning the lower house voted through the amendment followed by the upper house this afternoon.

The Brumby Labor Government has simplified the rules governing removal of vegetation around homes which will help communities in bushfire prone areas better prepare for the upcoming bushfire season.

Brumby to give owners right to clear bush property

LANDOWNERS will get greater powers to fell trees and clear scrub from their properties as the state prepares for the coming fire season.

Changes to vegetation policy were being made to give landowners more control to clear the land around their properties, Premier John Brumby said.

"It'll shift the balance more towards landowners," he said.

"They need some increased rights to make sure they can make their state safe and make their homes safe.
